Mother’s Day: Diamonds and Pearls

Are you looking for great gift ideas for Mother’s Day? If you’re thinking of jewelry, I recommend to go with classics for Mother’s Day: diamonds or pearls. Although I don’t agree with Marilyn Monroe that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, they are definitely something special. And so are pearls.

Diamonds are carbon that was crystallized under very high pressure and very high temperatures in the Earth’s mantle at depths of between 130 and 300 kilometers. In 2011 the countries with the biggest raw diamond output were Russia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Canada, Angola, Zimbabwe, Australia, and South Africa. Most gem-grade diamonds, which are used for jewelry, are colorless or white. In addition, gem diamonds also come in so-called “fancy colors.” These are fancy yellow, brown, pink, blue or green. Diamonds gain their brilliance and luster through cutting and polishing. They are the hardest known natural material. Diamonds are weighed in metric carats, with one carat being equal to 0.2 grams.

Diamonds are a symbol of longevity, timelessness, and extraordinariness. And that’s exactly what makes them the ideal Mother’s Day gift as a piece of jewelry. Hardly any other material is as dominant in music as diamonds are. In 1971, for example, Shirley Bassey sang the title song of the James Bond movie of the same name, “Diamonds Are Forever;” and Marilyn Monroe made the song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” famous in 1953. Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” from 1975 was a tribute to their former band leader Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett. And with “Diamonds” Rihanna landed a number one hit in the charts of several countries in 2012/2013.

STUDEX offers three different diamond studs for ear piercing with STUDEX System75. The studs have a four-prong setting made from 14K (585) yellow gold. The round brilliant cut diamonds come in 0.03 carat, 0.05 carat, or 0.08 carat per stud. Their diameter is 2 mm, 2.4 mm, or 2.8 mm. Their suggested retail price per pair is between 109 Euros and 289 Euros. These exclusive pieces give earlobes a very special sparkle and look great as second studs next to other earrings as well

Pearls have also been valued for many thousand years by various cultures and were used as burial gifts for example. “Natural” or “wild” pearls are natural products that grow without any human intervention. “Cultured” pearls develop as a response to human intervention in the form of a tissue implant into the shell. The majority of pearls used for today’s jewelry are cultured pearls.
