Diamonds are carbon that was crystallized under very high pressure and very high temperatures in the Earth’s mantle at depths of between 130 and 300 kilometers. In 2011 the countries with the biggest raw diamond output were Russia, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Canada, Angola, Zimbabwe, Australia, and South Africa. Most gem-grade diamonds, which are used for jewelry, are colorless or white. In addition, gem diamonds also come in so-called “fancy colors.” These are fancy yellow, brown, pink, blue or green. Diamonds gain their brilliance and luster through cutting and polishing. They are the hardest known natural material. Diamonds are weighed in metric carats, with one carat being equal to 0.2 grams.
